Before we go into the details of how to renew your CNA license, it is absolutely important to understand why you must renew your CNA license. Since a CNA license expires in two years time, a certified nursing assistant must make sure that he or she renews the license number.
The reason for that is very simple, without a valid license you won’t be able to work or practice in your state. You obviously don’t want that to happen. This is where one might wonder, how can I renew my CNA license.
Let us see in detail on how you can renew your CNA license.
The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation (OBRA) Act of 1987 has completely transformed the regulated training of certified nursing assistants. According to the act, all the states in the country must establish a Nurse Aide Registry. The state’s nursing board is mainly responsible for approving and regulating community colleges.
The nursing aide registry is also responsible for certifying nursing assistants. The registry also has the power to reject the certification for nursing assistant. The nursing aide registry must monitor the training, certification design, updating records of abuse, and misappropriation of patient property.
However, certified nursing assistants are required to renew their certification. When the certified nursing assistant has applied for a CNA license renewal, the registry usually replies within three months before the CNA expires. But due to various reasons if your CNA certification has expired, you need to take certain steps to renew the license.
Here is what you need:
• Date of original CNA certification
• State from where you were certified
• Date of last working day
• A computer with internet access and a phone
The first step is to find out how long your CNA license was expired and you can do that using your state’s nursing registry. In many states the amount of time since renewal makes a lot of difference. If you’re original CNA certification is unavailable, then you will have to contact your employers to get the original license.
Once you have contacted your nursing aide registry, you can be rest assured that your renewal form will reach your address within three months. You must remember to update names and addresses as all the information must be current. You won’t receive your renewal form unless the address given to the registry is correct.
During your previous two years as a CNA, you must have worked for at least eight hours. Your state registry can make out that you have or have not worked in the previous 2 years. You will have to retake your CNA training program if there is a 24 month lapse in working. If you are in Ohio, you can do the renewal by contacting
