A certified nursing assistant or a CNA is a member of the healthcare community who works directly under licensed or registered nurses. CNAs assist nurses in taking care of patients. They do that by taking vital signs of the patient or client like blood pressure and sugar readings. Nursing assistants are expected to answer call lights, help patients to turn and get up from the bed.
A CNA must also know how to reposition patients, assist patients with their hygiene requirements like bathing and using the toilet, and must also help them dress up and eat. This is the main reason why certified nursing assistants are also known as nurse aides or patient-care assistants.
In the state of California, a certified nursing assistant can become a licensed vocational nurse (LVN). To qualify for the post of a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) a CNA needs to complete a course in nursing pharmacology along with a minimum of 54 hours in patient care experience.
Given below are few pointers on how to renew CNA license in California.
You basically need two things, one is a certified nursing certificate, and you need to have internet access.
Request for clearance: You need to possess a criminal background clearance to renew your CNA license. To get your criminal background clearance you will have to fill out and submit a request for live scan service BCII-8016 form. Live scan is nothing but the automated transmitting technology which is used to scan your fingerprints to check whether the individual has any criminal background.
You will have to also submit a valid state driver’s license. You can log on to the website http://www.cdph.ca.gov for more on how to use live scan service.
California department of public health online: Once you are done with your scanning results, you will need to log on to the California department of public health and submit a CNA renewal application HS-283C form. The form consists of two parts, the first part has to be filled by you and the second part will have to be filled in by your current employer.
You have to take note of a very important point here. You must make sure that you renew your CNA license before two years at all cost. If you fail to renew before your CNA license expires, then you might be required to take the CNA exam again. For that you would have to enroll yourself in a CNA certification course and start all over again.
You can verify your CNA license from the California department of public health website that contains names of those CNAs whose are licensed and are authorized to work as a CNA in California.
